I have to say, having spent some time now married to my Lisu family, that one very beautiful tradition of theirs stands out the most to me. When a member of the tribe has fallen ill with any type of sickness, from a broken leg to a common house cold, many members of the family, friends come together to ‘be’ and simply hold space with that person until they are healed, or better. Entire families will spend the night in hospital rooms with a sick person, or many Lisu’s will gather in that person’s house helping to cook, clean, and sleep close to that person throughout the healing period.
My conclusion from all of this is: the power of intention is very real, and very powerful. When a group collective gets together with the intention of selflessly giving their time, energy, and prayers towards helping others, its speeds up the recovery process, not too mention is feels damn good! From both sides, it is liberating to hold space for the sick, and nothing feels better than having people around in honor of you when your not feeling well.
